| Special Initiatives

Through this pillar, our organization takes on strategic projects where we have sufficient competencies and the delivery of the projects directly or indirectly contributes to our vision while positively impacting the lives of children and youth with disabilities in Kenya.

Through this pillar,we also collaborate and partner with other like-minded organizations to implement projects that have mutual objectives and contributes to furthering our vision and mission.

Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) in partnership with ANDY through the Commonwealth Partnership for Democracy – CP4D seeks to foster greater engagement of PWDs in governance processes with a focus on three counties in Kenya namely Kakamega, Kisumu and Homa Bay. An inception activity for the project was carried out through consultative meetings comprising of the project implementation team and key stakeholders from the three counties drawing representation from the secretariat of the County Assemblies, Members of County Assembly and disabled persons organizations.
  1. Supporting DPOs in the different counties to get organized as a platform for engagement with governance processes
  2. Building the capacity of the overall coordinating DPO to identify key resource PWDs to contribute to enrich the discussions and inform strategic engagement in public participation forums
  3. Creating an engagement framework for coordinated engagement between DPOs and the PWDs with the County Assemblies; nominated MCAs representing interests of PWDs. Such a framework will ensure MCAs have a focal point to engage with.
  4. Inducting and building the capacities of the nominated MCAs representing interests of PWDs on their role, opportunities for engagement with their constituents; and effective representation of the constituents in the Assembly
  5. Sensitization of all MCAs on the need for inclusion within legislative processes.
  6. Strategic engagement with Assemblies on institutionally addressing barriers to engagement e.g. employment of Sign Language interpreters.
We are in the process of holding sensitization forums for the members of the assembly in the three counties and some of the key outcomes is the tremendous support and understanding of disability and the need for inclusion, plans to raise motion at the assembly on issues of disability inclusion and the county governments being rallied to ensure that there is authentic data on persons with disabilities.

Youth Disability Reporters, a project began by Leonard Cheshire Disability in the UK, mainly focuses on the hurdles encountered by persons with disabilities. The group consisting of 21 members in total was able to get adequate training gathering reports on the challenges persons with disabilities experience in terms of three main Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Health, employment, and education.
The global summit which was hosted in London was one of the greatest summits that were used to address and find a solution that will be able to be a benefit for persons with disabilities.
